Kruja is a small town located between Tirana and the Albanian Alps, which is more than one hour by car from Peledami apartment (47 km). It is famous for its castle and incredible shopping bazaar with many traditional shops and colourful local crafts.
Kruja Castle is a symbol of Albania’s resilience and strength throughout history. This historical place lets you experience the 15th– century battles with Ottomans through the castle. Here, Albanian national hero Skanderbeg made his legendary last stand until finally falling to the Ottoman army in 1478.
Today, the castle is mostly in ruins. Inside of the fortress walls you can explore Skanderbeg museum chronicles his military resistance. The Ethnographic museum in traditional Ottoman style offers you the opportunity to understand the culture of daily life during the 18th century.
There is not entrance fee to the Castle, only inside the museums you will have to pay a fee.
After the visit of the Castle walk down through the Old Bazaar and enjoy the unique atmosphere of historic shopping street. You can buy there nice souvenirs and jewellery. It’s good to have a cash with you in LEK. We recommend to go there with a private guide who drives you there and knows well the road.
It’s ideal for a half-day trip, suitable for families as well. We combined it with a visit to Bovilla Lake, making it a full-day excursion with a local guide who also served as an excellent driver of his well-maintained Jeep, essential for navigating the mountain roads. Please note, however, that if you plan to combine this trip with a visit to Bovilla Lake, it will be a long day, and it’s advisable not to bring small children along for the Bovilla Lake part.
